What I love about Outward Bound is that it gives students the opportunity to get outside their comfort zones. Going away to college is sometimes uncomfortable, so having the chance to practice being independent, taking risks, and maybe failing can be really good preparation for life after high school. I think programs like Outward Bound are great for students who aren’t sure they’re ready for a four-year college. Freshmen do not need to submit supplemental applications; applications are due in the sophomore year or when program prerequisite requirements have been completed. During this unprecedented time, we understand that students are facing new challenges regarding completion of the admissions and enrollment processes. Given the extensive disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are continuing to evaluate and adjust our admissions and enrollment policies at Boston University. Great essays are memorable because they distinctively portray their subjects without relying on clichés or formulaic topics. They convey on paper a sense of who the writer is as a person. Like great works of fiction, these essays clearly paint a picture in the reader’s mind. The main character is developed with depth and detail. After reading a great essay, I feel as if I have just had an enlivening conversation with the person even though it was entirely on paper. A great college essay is one in which the student’s voice and though process comes through clearly. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions continues to put students first in the admissions process. We continue to use fair and ethical practices as we recruit, review applications and counsel our prospective students and their families. Our admissions officers support and promote ethical responsibility with our colleagues in the admission profession. Transfer students with 24 or more college credits completed at the time of application will be reviewed on the basis of their transfer coursework. This makes sure there's a standard length for all the essays that a college receives, regardless of formatting or font.
